Research Symposium: Communicating in an AI Driven World: The Impact of AI on Creators and Consumers of News and Entertainment -- Session 1: AI, Education, and Human Meaning-Making
Sunday April 19, 2026 9:00am - 10:00am PDT
Research Symposium: Communicating in an AI Driven World: The Impact of AI on Creators and Consumers of News and Entertainment -- Session 1: AI, Education, and Human Meaning-Making

Artificial intelligence is changing the way the world interacts with machines and people, as well as how media organizations operate. As society grapples with the use of AI, those in the field of mass communication must consider the how the opportunities AI offers come with ethical ramifications. Professional organizations (RTDNA, PRSA, AAF, NAB) have adopted professional codes and guidelines for using AI in industry.

The 2026 BEA Research Symposium will examine AI research in mass communication. As AI is implemented, it is important to remember the human connection those working in the media industry bring to communicating information. Media professionals transmit information that is influenced by their broader understanding, shared background, and empathy. How can the media industry ethically adopt a technology that is disrupting how people seek, consume, and produce information?

The FCC, Broadcasters and Programming: Regulation by Raised Eyebrow?
Sunday April 19, 2026 10:15am - 11:15am PDT
Newton Minow’s “Vast Wasteland Speech’ is familiar to teachers and many students of broadcasting and media; but what are some other FCC officials’ speeches and actions that have influenced decisions by networks and broadcasters to cancel – or air – programs and other content? How about the decision to cancel “Late Night with Stephen Colbert”?  Were low ratings and high costs the reasons for Paramount deciding to end the show?  Did the Family Viewing Hour violate the First Amendment rights of program producers?  What about the current FCC Chair’s urgings as to how broadcasters should air content recognizing the country’s 250thbirthday.   Our panel of experts will address the past, present trends and anticipated future effects of government officials’ “prodding” and “suggestions” that fall short of regulation or legislation but nonetheless are intended to influence content in broadcasting and other electronic media.

Public interest vs. business interest: The impacts of ownership deregulation on broadcasters and communities in the United States
Sunday April 19, 2026 10:15am - 11:15am PDT
Since the Telecommunications Act of 1996, radio and television mergers and acquisitions have exploded in a push to deregulate local media ownership in the United States. As family owned stations became conglomerate owned, single stations became duopolies, and shell companies “owned” stations in name only, local broadcasters have borne the brunt of the business decisions of their corporate mega-owners. What has this done to the face of LOCAL broadcasting? This panel discusses impacts on minority radio ownership and programming, labor impacts for station workers, and the state of local journalism in the community.

This session will feature panelists from several universities that teach sports broadcasting. Some universities have full-fledged sports majors, while other colleges include sports activities as part of a general broadcast major. The programming may come from sports segments in radio or television newscasts, weekly shows, or specials. The program carriers vary from campus closed-circuit systems to community cable channels and public broadcasting stations. "What the $#!& were you thinking?!" and other Newsroom No-Nos in a Shifting Workplace Culture
Sunday April 19, 2026 10:15am - 11:15am PDT
Newsrooms are known for their “salty” workplace culture where “f bombs” fly as frequently as breaking news alerts sound; gallows humor long used to manage the stress of having a front row seat to death and destruction.

Both of these mainstays of newsroom culture are becoming increasingly problematic in today’s multi-generational newsrooms.

This panel will offer thoughts on what that means for educators training future journalists and for the employers who seek to hire them.

Practical practice: Getting students experience via immersive workshops
Sunday April 19, 2026 11:30am - 12:30pm PDT
You can't learn how to be a journalist or a media professional from a textbook or by simply sitting in a class. You learn by getting your hands dirty, doing the hard work and gaining field experience. This panel will be a look at tried and tested experiential workshops — some multi-day workshops — put on by different
universities around the world. These workshops and our panelists run the spectrum: A sports workshop incorporating multiple classes,
an immersive photo and multimedia storytelling workshop, global documentary workshops on social change and environmental issues. We want to include what works and what doesn't work, some step-by-step guides for creating a successful, hands-on workshop. Many of these workshops also provide portfolio pieces for students and/or have a community service component to them as well.

Are we obsolete or just our techniques?
Sunday April 19, 2026 2:00pm - 3:00pm PDT
Historically, teaching media skills was the domain of former professionals entering higher education to share their experience with future professionals. Student motivation was often to achieve lifelong dreams, and instructor motivation was to help in that pursuit. Now many students have little interest in traditional media, rarely consume it, and routinely use tools that automate and simplify previously specialized skills. Professors and industry professionals consider the implications of a changed media landscape and student culture.

Decolonizing the Documentary: Reframing Gaze, Voice, and Process
Sunday April 19, 2026 3:15pm - 4:15pm PDT
From the early explorers and ethnographic filmmakers such as Robert Flaherty in Nanook of the North, through projects like the BBC’s Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus, and into the present day, documentary has carried a long and often ignoble history of colonial representation. These works, while influential in the canon, too often reproduce a white or outsider gaze, casting communities as objects of study rather than as active participants in the telling of their own stories.

This panel takes as its starting point the urgent need to interrogate and reimagine documentary practices. We ask: How can we be more intentional in decentering the white gaze in our work? What strategies exist to resist exoticizing or “othering” participants, while still engaging in meaningful storytelling? And what does a community-based production process truly look like—one in which participants are not only subjects, but collaborators and co-authors of their narratives?

A Look At Late Night TV
Sunday April 19, 2026 3:15pm - 4:15pm PDT
Since the early 1950s, late night talk and entertainment shows have been a staple of network television. In today’s media saturated environment, the format may not succeed in the future. After a brief overview of late-night history, we will look at The Johnny Carson Show, the “Gatekeeper of Late-Night,” by examining how the show introduced America to new stand-up comics. The Tomorrow Show, a much different format, straddled the line between news and entertainment, providing an interesting counterpoint to Carson. While late night tv has been primarily a male dominated sphere, we examine women entertainers like Joan Rivers, Samantha Bee, Taylor Tomlinson and others who stand in contrast to the Carsons, Colberts and Kimmels. Finally, not all shows were successful, why and how did some succeed and others failed. Was it high Q-ratings or are there other skills needed for success? This panel will examine these issues.

As streaming and social media algorithms replace radio and other traditional media as the main recommendation engines for music, is there still a space in the culture for the "old" ways of introducing music to us? Is there still a point to broadcasting the VMAs or the Grammys? What about music critics at newspapers or magazines? This panel will examine the present and future of media related to the promotion of popular music.

ASC Presents Team Deakins
Sunday April 19, 2026 4:30pm - 5:30pm PDT
Team Deakins is the creative partnership of Roger Deakins and James Ellis Deakins. Together, they have collaborated on films, a podcast (Team Deakins), and two books, as well as other sundry projects. For over 30 years, this partnership has continued to evolve into a unique working collaboration. The session will be moderated by 7x Emmy-nominated cinematographer, Adam Bricker.

Roger A Deakins
Roger A. Deakins CBE, ASC, BSC, is one of today’s most honored cinematographers, renowned for his vast and varied body of work. He has been nominated for an Oscar 16 times and has won the award twice for the films Blade Runner 2049 and 1917. He has also received 17 nominations for the top honor awarded by the American Society of Cinematographers and has been nominated 11 times for the BAFTA award, winning five of them. Some of his other Oscar nominations are for: Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners and Sicaro; The Coen Brothers’ Fargo; Martin Scorsese’s Kundun; The Reader; Sam Mendes’ Skyfall; and Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, just to name a few. He has also been recognized by his British peers, with 11 British Society of Cinematographers (BSC) nominations and 7 wins. His myriad professional honors also two Independent Spirit Awards, numerous Critic’s awards and the National Board of Review’s Career Achievement Award. He is the sole cinematographer who has been honored with a CBE and a knighthood from his home country of England. Together with James, they have published two books: BYWAYS (a monograph of stills) and REFLECTIONS, a visual memoir.

James Ellis Deakins
James Ellis Deakins is the creative work partner of Roger Deakins. Born on the east coast of the United States, she double majored in college in Latin and Greek, doing a graduate course in Latin as an undergraduate. Once out of school, she began her film work in New York City as a film lab technician at DuArt Film Laboratories and then as a script supervisor in production. After moving to Los Angeles, she met Roger Deakins on a film set and their creative collaboration began. Eventually relinquishing the role of script supervisor to more fully enter into their collaborative partnership, she and Roger developed their unique working style which has continued to evolve as they enter into new enterprises including a podcast (“Team Deakins”), a website, BYWAYS (a book of still photography) and a visual memoir, REFLECTIONS. James’ natural affinity with technology proved essential when productions moved from the use of film capture to digital. Team Deakins create their approach to a film and execute the plan together. James oversees the many details that need to be coordinated which allows Roger to focus on capturing the visual. Working together, James and Roger have strived to create memorable images as well as share their knowledge with others.

Adam Bricker
Adam Bricker, ASC is a seven-time Emmy and five-time ASC nominated cinematographer based in Los Angeles. Originally from Chicago, Adam’s first camera was a MiniDV Handycam, a gift from his parents for his thirteenth birthday, and his first credits included the films he shot starring his three younger sisters. Adam studied digital cinema at DePaul University before graduating from the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where he fell in love with cinematography. Adam’s most recent work includes Hacks (HBO), Chef's Table (Netflix) & American Vandal (Netflix).

Nonlinear Narrative Storytelling: Exploring the pros, cons, and intrigue of complex plot structures: Phase 2.
Sunday April 19, 2026 4:30pm - 5:30pm PDT
This panel will consider the appeal, utility and marketability of non-linear narratives.  This is Phase 2 of a 3 year look at such narratives. Previously we defined and explored different framings to help engagement with this approach.
Next year the panel will look more specifically at how to help students write for and film a nonlinear short.

Moderator: Raymond Anderson, University of Guam

Panelists:
Raymond Anderson, University of Guam; Look Again: The Utility of Non-linear Storytelling
Non-linear storytelling exists because of several key advantages for the creators and the industry they serve. But it also provides benefits to the audience and the broader culture, with cross cultural allure. We will explore non-linearity’s roots, presence and challenges. Consideration for its place in the classroom is also discussed.

Jonathan Mason, Rowan University; “You’re Doing What?”: The Challenges of Marketing & Distributing Non-Linear Narratives
This segment looks at the push and pull between artistic freedom and commercial reality: the thrill of fractured, time-bending storytelling on one side, and the headaches it causes for distributors, programmers, and streamers who have to frame it for audiences trained on straight-line narratives. We’ll dig into how these projects are pitched and sold, how marketing tries to give audiences a way in without flattening what makes them unique, and why some non-linear films manage to catch fire while others never quite find their crowd.

Khaled AlqahsKuwait University; The Appeal of Non-Linear Narratives in Arab Cinema and Television
This presentation explores the appeal of non-linear storytelling in Arab cinema and television, focusing on how these narratives engage audiences beyond conventional linear structures. By disrupting chronological order through flashbacks, parallel plots, and circular openings, Arab filmmakers and television writers create works that reflect the complexity of lived experience while heightening curiosity and emotional impact. Such approaches not only challenge audiences to piece together meaning but also offer distinctive cultural resonances tied to themes of memory, identity, and social change. The session highlights how non-linear structures enrich Arab visual storytelling and expand its creative possibilities.

Alessandra Bautze, Georgia State University; Non-Linear Narratives as Anti-Hollywood: A Tool for Screenwriters
What is the appeal of non-linear narratives for screenwriters? How do screenwriters employ non-linear narratives to explore character motivations, interiority, and relationships? By framing non-linear narratives as “anti-Hollywood” (as delineated by Michael Z. Newman in his indie cinema viewing strategies), this presentation will examine these and other questions, arguing that non-linear narratives occupy a specific place outside of traditional Hollywood filmmaking, often in the realm of “Indiewood” (as delineated by Geoff King).

William Hanff, University of the District of Columbia; Fabula & Syuzhet in Transmedia Narratives and Non-Linear Storytelling
This presentation problematizes the structure of both linear and non-linear visual storytelling by applying the Russian Formalist ideas of narratology to contemporary media productions. Comparing and contrasting how different levels of ‘Suspension of Disbelief’ are challenged in different genres, formats, and ‘story presentations’—research from Vladimir Propp, Walter Benjamin, and Henry Jenkins can be deployed to explore and systematize non-linear narratives. From early beginnings of flashbacks and flash-forwards in early films, to non-linear gameplay, postmodern cinema, and V.R/A.R. applications the concepts of fabula (story content) versus syuzhet (story arrangement) remain central. Technological determinism of digital storytelling tools, and the relation to narrative form will also be explored.
