Our media: is it “mass” or is it just each pick and choose? And what does this mean to existing mass comm theory research?
Monday April 20, 2026 9:00am - 10:00am PDT
For the first time, more people are streaming content than are connected to cable/satellite.
In 2023, online audio audiences bypassed broadcast audiences for the first time.
As the media ecosystem evolves to increased narrowcasting, this panel will explore whether existing mass media theories are still sufficient and/or valid to explain and predict current and future media effects.
The related question will consider whether it’s time to consider new theories to explain media effects in an increasingly non-mass media world.

The Future of Broadcast Journalism: Dual Enrollment High School Programs
Monday April 20, 2026 10:15am - 11:15am PDT
The threat to the integrity of journalism is at an all-time high. Media is adapting to technological changes such as AI, combating widespread disinformation, and the constant change in how the public consumes news. In addition, high school and college broadcast programs deal with roadblocks such as: as misalignment of curriculum, credit transfer issues and liability considerations. Changes such as these highlight the need to strengthen dual-enrollment programs. Statistics show this educational advantage improves the career opportunities for future journalists especially for students living in underrepresented areas and demographics.

Rather than focusing on specific platforms, the panel highlights critical skills, adaptability, and ethical frameworks that will remain vital as journalism continues to evolve alongside AI.

Monday April 20, 2026 12:45pm - 1:45pm PDT

In 2024, Pew Research Center found that 20% of adults regularly get news from influencers – and most have no affiliation or background in a news organization. Learn from two professors who began a social media news influencer project and took those lessons into the classroom; and from a local TV news reporter on the challenges of breaking through.

New Frontiers in AI and Journalism Research
Monday April 20, 2026 3:15pm - 4:15pm PDT
Consistent with BEA’s mission to advance research on media technologies and education, this panel addresses how AI reshapes the study of journalism — not only as an object of analysis but as a methodological revolution in media research itself. It aligns with the convention’s focus on technological transformations, algorithmic cultures, and the future of scholarly inquiry in media and communication.
This panel offers a timely and urgently needed scholarly conversation for the BEA 2026 Convention by illuminating how artificial intelligence is transforming journalism not only as a professional practice but also as a rapidly evolving domain of academic inquiry. Uniquely distinguished by the prominence and interdisciplinary reach of its participants, the panel features leading scholars and industry experts whose work has shaped national and international conversations around AI, media innovation, and communication research. ICA Fellows Don Shin and Shuhua Zhou bring perspectives on AI epistemology, algorithmic fact-checking, and audience cognition; Kerk F. Kee, an interdisciplinary principal investigator with over $13M in prestigious grants, contributes cutting-edge insights into AI-driven risk communication systems and their implications for journalistic verification; Alexandra M. Merceron, a senior industry executive and faculty expert in emerging media technologies, connects academic theory to real-world innovation as she examines the rise of LLM-based information ecosystems and generative engine optimization. Nigerian journalist, founder and executive editor of Minority Africa Caleb Okereke speaks on the panel both as a researcher and practitioner with a focus on questions of ethics and representation in AI and journalism. His current research work examines automating the journalistic "gut feeling." His research team uses LLMs to select images to accompany news stories in a large-scale study. Collectively, these leading AI experts demonstrate the depth, rigor, and forward-looking vision that aligns with BEA’s mission to advance research and education on emerging media technologies. Their combined expertise ensures that this session will offer attendees unparalleled insights into the theoretical, methodological, and practical transformations reshaping journalism in an AI-integrated media environment.

The First Amendment in an AI Society
Monday April 20, 2026 3:15pm - 4:15pm PDT
AI is here to stay. In 2026, virtually all digitally literate people would agree, even (or especially) including Generative AI. That being the case, is Amendment I to the U.S. Constitution, celebrating its 235th anniversary this year, here to stay as well? Does it still have relevance? Or even practical applicability? Those are the provocative questions this panel will explore.

Fireside Chat with Cameron Coats and Zach Sang
Monday April 20, 2026 3:15pm - 4:15pm PDT
Join us for a fireside chat with Cameron Coats, Online Editor for Radio Ink magazine and radio personality Zach Sang.

Zach Sang is the most formidable yet likable inquisitor of his generation. Having kick-started his career when he was just 14, launching a radio show from his New Jersey bedroom, Sang went on to host Zach Sang and the Student Body on GOOM Radio, eventually becoming executive producer and music director of Zang Radio, one of the largest online teen radio stations at that time. Post-GOOM he partnered with Westwood One, spending 10 years on terrestrial radio hosting and producing the Zach Sang Show, transmitting to 90 terrestrial stations and millions of listeners (not to mention racking up millions of views online). Sang’s interviewed some of the biggest names in pop culture including Billie Eilish, Sam Smith, Blackpink, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, BTS, Zendaya, and countless other top tier names. His conversations are personally probing and creatively illuminating, but they’re also safe harbor, free from a clickbait gotcha agenda, offering instead, easy rapport and an open ear.

For his next act Sang is continuing his partnership with Amazon Music across the board — which started in 2021 — while taking his show back to radio. Additionally the 30-year-old’s got his eyes on increasingly ambitious, broader scope projects. His production company Sang a Song is humming, developing a slate of TBA multi-channel formats.

In a world where Content Is King, this multi-hyphenate is always iterating, but his ethos remains unwavering: Zach Sang leads with curiosity, empathy, and humor. He’s sharing too, but primarily he’s listening so that others can be heard.

Tim McCarthy, president of the Broadcasters Foundation of America, will briefly kick off the session share the work of the foundation. The mission of the Broadcasters Foundation of America is to improve the quality of life of men and women in the radio and television broadcast profession who find themselves in acute financial need due to a critical illness, severe accident, or other serious misfortune.

Affordable, Game-Changing Production Technology Tour
Monday April 20, 2026 4:30pm - 5:30pm PDT
Danny Thomas from Connect2 will lead this tour focusing on Audio Production equipment, Camera (Worlds First 360-degree drone),accessories, and AI Motion Control technology with an emphasis on affordability. See the tour listing and why Danny loves them for educators below:

RØDE Microphones - "RØDE mics are known for delivering clean, neutral, “usable” audio across many situations. Many models (like the NT1) are considered studio-grade for vocals and instruments. Wireless and on-camera mics provide clear, reliable voice capture for video and interviews. Professionals like this because the sound:
Needs less fixing in editing & Works across different voices/environments"

SMALLRIG - "Professionals use SmallRig gear to rig a mobile phone because it turns a simple smartphone into a modular, cinema-style production tool—without the cost or bulk of a full camera setup."

Advanced Image Robotics - "The AIR platform is a three piece solution that makes video capture better, simpler, and radically less expensive. It includes:  AirOne a smart robot that simulates human camera movement AIRApp super intuitive camera assistant a native IOS app that enables touchscreen control of Air One directly AIR Cloud It simplifies and automates multicam technical complexity so you can concentrate on “telling the story”. AIRcloud is an orchestration layer for your cameras that simplifies your most complicated productions."

Shenzhen Neewer Technology Co., Ltd - "They offer “good-enough professional gear at very low cost,” which fits education budgets perfectly."

Insta360 - "The world's first 360 drone¹
Most drones: Point one camera in one direction

The A1: Captures everything around it at once (full 360°)
Uses dual lenses (top + bottom) to see the entire sphere

👉 Meaning: You don’t aim the camera while flying
You choose your angles later in editing

That alone is a huge shift in how aerial filming works."

Grass Valley
BEA members will meet with John Lyth and Greg Doggett while visiting the Grass Valley booth at NAB 2026 will be able to evaluate how industry‑standard tools can support the structure and outcomes of modern media programs. The LDX 100 camera range and K‑Frame switchers, widely used across the world's most prestigious events, provide a clear benchmark for what students should learn on to be job‑ready. The booth tour will highlight how these systems map directly to today’s technical, production, and live‑sports curricula, helping institutions shape programs that reflect real‑world workflows.
The tour will also introduce educators to Grass Valley’s AMPP platform and its relevance for curriculum design in an era of software‑defined production. AMPP’s flexible, scalable environment allows programs to teach cloud, hybrid, and remote production models without heavy capital investment. For institutions designing future‑focused courses or looking to expand production capabilities across multiple departments or campuses, AMPP offers a practical way to embed modern workflow concepts into academic programs.
